After the reign of Hedi Slimane, it was a start of a new era for Saint Laurent with the new designer Anthony Vaccarello, and everybody was curious what he can do with the famous French fashion house. After all, Slimane did a lot; from revitalising the brand, through taking the shows to Los Angeles, to ripping Yves from Saint Laurent, it was a lot to take in. Not all of his action was popular to say at least, but they kinda worked.
After a change like this – I guess -, it’s inevitable to make some comparisons, but quite frankly, the new designer’s intentions are not totally clear to me. My best guess is some kind of transition, taking over the iconic brand step-by-step, but who knows really? On one hand Vaccarello first move was to replace the fashion show to Paris, and he made a nice, but not too harsh tribute to Yves with all of the YSL lettered heels.
On the other hand, this collection was more like Slimane than Vaccarello himself. True that, Vaccarello is not far away from casual sexiness either, but all the black colors, the 80s vibe, the leathers and lots of mini minis have too much Hedi in them.
But then again, it’s not a big issue, as the collection is nice and sexy and edgy. It has everything to inspire others (the leather over denim jacket is a hit already!) and sell out nicely. To gain some confidence for going further. And maybe next time he can be more himself, shaping the brand to his individual taste.
Do you feel the urge to wear leather jacket over a denim number too?
