You know, like bikinis or swimsuits, sunglasses, a scarf or something for cover and the list can go on and on and on. I remember those times when a bikini (and some cash :)) was just enough to go to the beach. But now? There are complete what to buy lists available everywhere. And I have to say, I don’t get the fuss, I never did. And I lived in a country where we had real, proper, hot summer.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m fan to have summery accessories because they can do all the difference on a nice, hot day. They can add something extra to the mood. But frankly, these are the accessories, which you’re gonna wear over and over again. All summer and probably next summer too. So why not?
But why, oh why on earth would I spend a small fortune on something, which probably will end up in the charity bag or in the trash in the end on the season. I’m gonna be cruelly frank here, so if this this thing is your bread and butter, don’t read it any further. 🙂
I told you!
So first things first, how many bikinis a girl/woman does need at the same time?
Bikinis or swimsuits or whatever you favor are necessary. But, I never really understand why somebody needs 20 pairs of them. I mean, one or two extras are always nice to have because it means variety, but 10 or 20? Are you able to wear those all? And what about those ones which leave odd marks on the body after some sunbath? What’s the point? To make plans about wearing the smaller ones first and the fussy ones later?
I really don’t get it. I have one simple black bikini with a triangle top and a simple knicker. Full stop. Shame or not, this is the truth. Moreover, I’m happy with it, I wear it, when rarely get to the beach or swimming pool. I also like to wear a short like bottom over my bikini bottom. I have a really fun, orange! one with Hawaiian floral print for years, and I’m not planning to change it at all.
My summer necessities. I took an other picture with my sunnies on but my iMac didn’t want to cooperate with me. Oh, well…
Secondly, I think bikinis and the rest of them are way to overpriced.
A single bikini top at Zara (which is not so pricey) is 16 GBP on full price, I couldn’t find the shorts, but I suppose those have similar prices. So it means a small (yet somewhat designed, after all, how many possibilities could have a top and panties combo? but whatever) piece of material is 25-30 GBP. A swimsuit is 20-23 (again on full price). Ok, these prices doesn’t stop the world, but come on! And most of the people wear them for 2-3 weeks in a year. If they have more of them, then probably even less times.
I think the simpler the better, but I wouldn’t say no to that palm print. 🙂
And how many sunglasses do we need?
I love sunglasses, but I couldn’t wear them so much now (hello, gloomy London!) and I hardly wear more than 1-2 pairs. Actually, I have two pairs for years. But neither of them are lame. I rather pay more for good quality and design and wear them for years and years than have 10 pairs with poor quality. My eyes are important and I don’t want to risk them. And again, how many different types of sunglasses can be designed? And how many would actually fit a girl’s face?
My summer/beach wear in the UK and Ireland. Haha… The Aviator is my favorite pair os sunnies by far, but I have Wayfarers too.
Fancy beach bags?
Of course, nobody takes her Birkin to the beach and leaves it on the sand. Wait, what? Let me rephrase that, no mortal woman carries her Hermes/LV/Gucci/SL/Coach/whatever good and beloved bag to the beach. A big straw basket or canvas tote is just fine and trendy too. If you wear them all summer, it can be worth to buy a better one, but just to the beach, a cheaper one does just well too. And are really nice, pre loved ones on eBay!
Nothing is better than a good catch from eBay or the local vintage store.
And some cover up?
Having a cover up something is really trendy right now. Because we have to be more decent in the cafeteria, right? It’s completely fine to walk and lay on the beach in almost nothing, but we need to cover up ourselves in the cafeteria on the beach… When I was a kid, we just don’t care, my parents didn’t care, actually nobody cared. We were on holiday, after all. If we really really needed the urge to wear something, we solved it with a towel or the clothes (top or shorts or dress) we had worn coming to the beach.
I think there is one, and only one justified point to spend less or more on a cover up. If you can wear it somewhere else too. A big scarf for example which you can use a lot, a caftan or a simple summer dress are all good solutions. But buying something total see trough just to that 2 or 3 weeks is a pretty nonsense.
A big, soft thin scarf is the best solution.
Finally, some fancy towels and footwear?
Maybe it’s just me and the wild East where I was growing up, but we were pretty afraid that somebody stole our stuff from the beach, so we never brought fancy stuff there. And what is all the beach about? Salty water and sand and heat and sunshine. Neither of these are good to fancy stuff. So why my towel should be fancy? A not too ragged, non white one is just fine. The same applies to footwear, a simple flip flop is the best in my eyes.
Maybe it’s just me, but when we are on vacation I don’t want to worry about my stuff or thinking about which bikini top should I pair with which bikini bottom. I want to relax and enjoy every moment of my summer time; swimming, laying on the sun, playing ball or card games, visiting the city and the local market, being with the one(s) who I love. And simple things are enough for that. Plus I have more money to spend on the experience. 🙂 Am I right?
Do you enjoy buying every nice stuff to vacations?
